Destination Guide - The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, NC


Hidden away on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee is one of the most intense motorcycle rides.

While we love a good relaxing cruise to blow off the work week steam, this weekend, we're going to try something a little more challenging. Tucked away on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is terribly exciting road known as The Tail of the Dragon. With 318 turns on the 11 mile stretch of road, this ride is not for inexperienced riders. However, if you've got the skills and don't get nauseous easily, driving this road is more fun that riding a rollercoaster.

If you haven't put two and two together yet, this strip of U.S. 129 gets its name from the route being said to look like a dragon's tail. Snaking through the lush greenery of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, taming this beast is nothing less than an intense ride. Sure, the ride is short but that just means you can turn around and do it all over again without being late to dinner.

This route is perfect for quick jaunts through the trail and has plenty of accommodations at both the beginning and end for relaxing in between riveting rides. Don't live in the area? We highly recommend making the trip to challenge yourself with this ride at least once and, with plenty of hotels in the area, it's easy to find a warm bed to sleep in afterward.

However, if you're a beginner rider, this trail might not be for you. The tree of shame, which is decorated with bits and pieces of motorcycle parts lost in crashes, reminds us that even experienced riders need to be cautious and remember to keep their eyes on the twists and turns no matter how beautiful the scenery is.

The ride through The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap in North Carolina definitely isn't a sight seeing ride but will definitely give you something to remember. And be sure to brag to your friends afterward that you tamed the dragon.
