Pala Raceway Moto Results

With two motos left in the season, the AMA Lucas Oil Motocross Championship riders headed to Pala Raceway in San Diego to finish off the series. With the last race at Steel City being one of the most nail biting races of the season, fans were eager to see the finale that they had been waiting for. Though both races wouldn't let fans down, there were very few surprises.

Going in to the first moto, the battle for the Championship Title was between the two Ryan's with Villopoto in the lead. If Dungey were able to pull out a first place finish in both motos, Villopoto would only have to secure fourth place in both races to secure the title. After his crash earlier this season, Chad Reed had a difficult time getting back in the groove of things and lost his chance to win the title and changed his focus to keeping the third place spot.

The start to the first moto was not without its drama. While Chad Reed went down in the first corner, MikeAlessi took the holeshot and Justin Barcia taking the lead for the first bit of the race before being passed up Villopoto. The point leader ultimately came in first, which extended his lead and further secured him the Championship Title. After the first moto, Villopoto had to merely finish the second moto to win the series.

In the second race, Chad Reed seemed to have a stroke of luck when he got into first place at the beginning of the race. At the front of the pack, Reed was being pressured by Justin Barcia who was close behind him and would crash, only to make his way back up to fourth.

Both of the Ryan's were held up by some congestion at the beginning of the race and didn't seem to have much chance of securing first or second places. But the two racers managed to crawl back up the ranks allowing Villopoto to take third, which would give him the title. Though Dungey was able to make his was back to the top and secured first place in the second moto, it ultimately would not be enough points to close the gap, giving Villopoto the series win and getting Dungey second.

All of the riders expressed that they're happy for the season to be over and ready for the next.
