Monster Energy Supercross - Race 16, Salt Lake City

With only two races left and the championship title already settled, 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross headed to Salt Lake City over the weekend. While Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed and James Stewart were all to be missing in action this weekend due to injuries, Ryan Dungey is back in the game to try and crawl back up the point standing.

It was Davi Millsaps, however, who snagged the early lead in the Supercross main event with Dungey and Jake Weimer right behind him. Fueled by his recent successes, Weimer quickly took the chance to make his move past Dungey in the second lap. For nearly the entire race, Dungey attempted to get around Weimer but was met by text book blocks, even taking the KTM rider down just after the halfway point of the race.

Meanwhile, Millsaps took advantage of his lead in order to ride consistently and maintain a distance from the two battling riders.

After going down in the whoops, Dungey was back with a vengeance and didn't hesitate to shoot past Weimer in the 15th lap and set his sights on Millsaps. As the two riders caught up with the slower tail end of riders, Millsaps found himself tangled in some lapped traffic, allowing Dungey to get past him in the finale moments of the race to come behind for the win. Millsaps took second with Weimer coming in third. Behind them, Justin Brayton and Mike Alessi finished off the top five.

"It was great racing out there tonight, and I really dug deep," said Dungey. "I didn't see [the pass] coming and that was my fault. My front wheel got a barrier in the corner and I went down. My focus was to run him down, and I did. I had a tough part of the middle of the season, and I knew I had the speed tonight. I just needed to be patient."

This weekend the racers will all return to Las Vegas for the season finale. While Villopoto already has the 2012 title, Brayton is only 7 points behind Millsaps for second place while Dungey is a mere five points behind Brayton. The last two podium spots are still up for grabs.
