    A well-made tool

    By introspeck

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Motion Pro Chain Breaker & Riveting Tool:

This is a solid tool. I bought it because several people on a motorcycle mailing list gave it a thumbs-up... now I do too.

The instructions are almost OK. They aren't perfectly clear at first. So I did a "dry-run" first. I assembled the tool for each operation (chain break, plate press, rivet) and worked the tool. That helped me understand the instructions a little better.

Breaking the chain was a breeze. I ground the pin tip off and the tool did the rest. In the past I've driven the pins out with a hammer and a drift, which is a pain.

The only part I don't like about the tool? Pressing the link plate on. The tool's press plate pivots while you are cranking up the pressure, so it doesn't line up with the pins after they come through the link plate. I had to back the tool off three times to line it up again. Next time I may slip something between the tool body and the press plate to keep it from rotating. In the end it did the job, so it's not a big problem.

Riveting the pins was quick and easy. I almost forget to insert the "anvil" which goes behind the pin.. Then, when I turned around to get the wrench, the anvil fell out while I wasn't looking. Make sure to double-check that it's in there before you crank down on it. Again, no biggie.

I'm glad it came in a hard-shell case to hold the tool and all the small parts. It would be easy to lose some of the smaller bits, so I'm careful to inventory them when packing it up.

Comments about Motion Pro Chain Breaker & Riveting Tool:

The tool worked well and the directions were clearly written. All parts were precise and expertly crafted. I ground the rivet heads off my 520 chain even though the directions didn't say it was required. I didn't want to risk damaging the tool. I read of another reviewer (webbikeworld) that snapped off the screw-on handle when trying to remove a pin without grinding the head off first.

Yes! Just make sure you grind off the old rivet! Some chains bigger than 520 may require you to grind the head off the old chain.
