About Motorcycle Batteries

Motorcycle batteries come in many shapes and sizes, and they’re made to fit thousands of machines. These power sources are crafted specifically to get through extreme heat from the engine, and other challenging situations while maintaining a small package that’s just a fraction of the size of a car battery. Motorcycle batteries feature different levels and kinds of technology, and choosing the right one is based on several factors including your bike’s model and your riding needs.

How to Choose Motorcycle Batteries

Since motorcycle batteries come in a range of styles, and they’re built with various technologies, one battery might work for a certain ride and not fit your needs. Some motorcycles need basic lead acid batteries, which are the old industry standbys. Others need newer versions of the lead acid battery like the AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery, which lasts longer than many batteries and is stronger than some. Other batteries on the market include factory-sealed gel batteries and lithium batteries (these weigh up to 70% less than standard batteries and are up to 70% smaller).

Yuasa High Performance Maintenance Free Battery (YTX20HL-BS) Review

Reviewed by Brad G on Jan 1

If you have a big bike that requires this size battery, GET THE YTX20HL-BS UNIT!!!! - Ladies and gentlemen with big motorcycles with big engines...I learned something 10 years into having a Triumph Rocket III 2300 CC car-engine-size having motorcycle engine and the batteries needed to crank over big motors. I've had this bike for over a decade and have been through a small number of Yuasa batteries. Even on a good day with a newer battery, the Yuasa YTX20BS (Note the subtle code distinction that is missing the "HS" in the line) could have trouble sparking the motor up. I didn't realize the stock battery code from Yuasa had a higher output version with the HS code in the line - IE this one I am reviewing. Turns out this is what my bike needed. Dependable 32 degree winter starts and a never-before heard faster starter motor speed. Well worth the few extra $$. Like every Yuasa I'm sure it'll last a few years - I'm just letting you know that the extra cold cranking amps and AH capacity is, in my view for a big motor, well worth it. Happy riding all, 5 stars.
