A Swingarm is the main component of the rear suspension on most motorcycles and ATV’s. The Swingarm helps hold the rear axle firmly while pivoting vertically, to allow the suspension to absorb bumps in the road.
Not only does the swingarm absorb bumps and hold the wheel’s axle but it can also act as a tool for traction when an extended swingarm is used. Extended Swingarms give the machine an extended wheel base which can help with traction and handling.
Extended Swingarms help make high powered sportbikes such as hayabusa’s and ZX14’s keep the front end down when accelerating through the gears quickly allowing the rider to steer the machine. Many extended swingarms can be found on drag racing and hill climb applications. Swingarms come in many sizes and designs but still all generally do the same thing.
Your swingarm is an important piece of your motorcycle or ATV. All the bearings and seals of the swingarm should be lubricated and maintained regularly as to keep them in optimum working order.
