Replacing my 10 year old Fieldsheer mesh jacket that had a zip in insulated waterproof liner. With this jacket, the insulated vest is separate from the waterproof liner.

I've needed a new mesh jkt for some time now. I've almost always had good experiences with Joe Rocket products. Good fit, durable, does what the mfr. says it does.

I've been wearing a Joe Rocket Phoenix Jacket commuting to work for 10 years. Wore it on trips up and down the west coat of CA and all the way to Montana and back to So Cal. The zipper is finally starting to wear out. Seems like a good move to choose it again with a high viz upgrade.

Overall, a good summer jacket.
Bought this jacket to replace an 11 year old Fieldsheer silver summer jacket that has served me well & even survived a low speed highside with just a small scuff on the shoulder. I've only worn the Ion jacket a few times, but have already noticed several unique aspects of the jacket.
1. The upper front pocket for the phone was designed to accommodate phones made 4 years ago. Phones have continued to get bigger since & may not fit in the pocket (like my S10+). The back pocket is nice for carrying documents for work, but I'm not sure what else it's good for. The inside glasses pocket is great for storing my sunglasses when riding home at night. The keyclip is kinda overkill, but convenient if your leaving all your gear (helmet, gloves, etc.) in one place. The lower side pockets are VERY roomy & can hold all kinds of odd shaped things without making the jacket uncomfortable.
2. Getting extra snap button parts is a nice touch, since repeatedly adjusting them when the liner is used will likely cause the buttons to come apart. I can NOT say that is will be the case with the Ion, but over time, it was with my Fieldsheer.
3. My Fieldsheer fit snug, but I always worried about it riding up in a sliding crash. The Ion's 2 belt loop straps eliminate that worry when wearing jeans.
4. The sleeve zippers, Velcro & snap buttons do a great job of closing up the sleeve opening & will probably work well inside gloves that have a long gauntlet. If the gloves have a very short to no gauntlet, not so well. Will try wearing my long gauntlet glove next ride.
5. The Ion's mesh is more open than my Fieldsheer. I do have some concern about the Ion's abrasion resistance in the event of a sliding crash, but one can not expect it to be equal to a leather jacket. So it is what it is.
6. The airflow is pretty good at speeds above 30 MPH, but the large black area on the upper back can get warm when at a traffic light. For the best airflow, not only does air need to flow in, but also needs to flow out. Though my Fieldsheer had the same type of back pad, air seemed to flow out better at lower speeds on it than the Ion. Probably due to the Ion having less open area on the upper back & lower padded pocket (which the Fieldsheer didn't have).
7. I only wear the jacket while commuting to & from work. I usually won't ride to work on days that rain is predicted, but have been caught in the rain a few time riding home. Though the rain liner is thin, I've read that it will not fit in the back pocket. I haven't tried myself, but if it doesn't, this would be a negative mark against the Ion. Especially when one is riding a sportbike where storage space is already very limited.
8. I haven't ridden with the liner & insulated vest on, but I am concerned about it's ability to keep my arms warm on cold nights. My Fieldsheer only came with a lightly insulated rain resistant windbreaker, but the sleeves were insulated as well. If there is an issue with the Ion's rain liner keeping my arms warm, I'll just wear the old windbreaker from the Fieldsheer.
9. I'm unimpressed with the reflective material in the shoulders. They don't reflect anywhere near how they are shown on Joe Rocket's website. For the most part, the hi-viz yellow makes up for it.

Overall, this is a very good summer jacket for urban commuting. I would not recommend it for spirited sportbike riding. It's best to wear at least a leather jacket with higher rated padding for such. The fit is true & it has enough adjustability to get the jacket to fit snugly all over, no matter what your physical body shape may be.

Versatility
With a silver bike i really needed something that stood out and this high vis really does. With the three layer of jacket, liner and insulated layer it make this jacket very versatile. Just throwing on a long sleeve i ride with this jacket down to about 30 degrees for 30 mins on my sport Turing with no real fairing and it works great. As other stated mobility is great and protection is adequate but for the price point and flexibility it is a solid buy.
